Brown Kalijira Rice
Tiny Aromatic Rice, Imported from Bengal

Whole grain Brown Kalijira is the same premium rice of choice known in Bengal as the "Prince of Rice," with more nutritional value. Leaving the germ and bran layer intact, this tiny aromatic brown rice is heart healthy with a low glycemic index. An heirloom rice distinguished by its delicious and delicate nutty flavor, Brown Kalijira cooks in only 25 minutes, producing firm yet tender separate grains. With a soft texture, this rice is excellent for those who prefer white rice but want to incorporate healthy whole grains into their diets. As a whole grain Brown Kalijira Rice can help to reduce the risk of heart disease and some cancers.

Kalijira Rice is traditionally served as a pilaf, using aromatic spices like turmeric, cinnamon sticks, cloves and cardamom pods. We also like making a simpler pilaf using onions and mushrooms and our favorite stock.

The region of Bengal extends from Calcutta to Bangladesh and lies primarily in the Ganges River Delta where rice cultivation goes back at least four thousand years. Home to the Bengal Tiger, and the world's largest mangrove forest, the rich soil of this delta region is the wellspring for a diversity of species.
